Hartmut Hermann August Scharf

I worked with Hartmut in Brussels, when I was new and fresh in the Commission and he had been there for a few years already.  He was charming, a good colleague and someone who came over gruff, but had a heart of gold.  He made me laugh, even on bad days.  I left to go work in a Commission delegation and missed his retirement, in fact, I never saw him again. Though, he surprised me with a lovely phone call about 10 years ago, when he realised I was living near Trier.  I'm very sorry I didn't keep in better touch and that I never managed to find the time to pop by Dackscheid and visit, though I thought about it often.  He was a lovely person and I was very much saddened to discover yesterday that he died, more than a year ago.
